Rattle
Rattle of a Simple Man

Rattle Of A Simple Man
A comedy by Charles Dyer
Directed by Mary-Jane Minear

Percy is a middle-aged football supporter from Manchester, down in London to watch a match. After the game he is picked up by Cyrenne, a posh young prostitute in a drinking club, and as a result of a bet with one of his mates he accompanies her back to her basement flat. Percy is naïve and nice, and after some initial bluster he reveals that he lives with his mum and is still a virgin. Cyrenne is well educated and well travelled, the daughter of a Brigadier, and part of the smart set. As the play progresses, and the empathy between the characters develops, they start to reveal the truth about themselves—and all is not what it seems!

4-6 & 9-13 August, 2011 @ 8pm.  Saturday matinées @ 2pm.

Shadowlands
A drama by William Nicholson
Directed by Vicky Horwood

In the mid-1950s the serene world of academia in which C S Lewis, Oxford Don, theologian, author of The Narnia Chronicles and confirmed bachelor surrounded himself was rudely shattered by the arrival of Joy Gresham, an American poet and writer 17 years his junior, a double divorcee and a self-styled "Jewish Communist Christian". At first attracted by an intellect as deep and broad as his own, plus a matching sense of humour and fun, he agreed to a civil marriage so she could stay in the UK. However, their feelings for each other deepened to the extent that when Joy developed a terminal illness shortly after, they married in a Christian ceremony held at her bedside. When Joy finally died in 1960 after much suffering, Lewis found his faith in God put to the ultimate test.
This moving play explores love, faith and the fragility of human happiness through the medium of a smart, sharp and often funny script, without lapsing into sloppy sentimentality.

See How They Run
A farce by Philip King
Directed by Ian Rigney

It's 1943 and in war-weary Britain village life continues unabated in Merton-cum-Middlewick. Penelope Toop, former actress and now married to the local vicar, the Rev. Lionel Toop, is preparing for a visit to the theatre to see Noël Coward's Private Lives whilst her husband is away overnight. Accompanying her is her old acting pal Clive Winton, now a lance-corporal in the Army. To dodge Army curfew regulations Clive changes into Lionel's second-best suit (complete with clerical 'dog-collar') and pretends to be Arthur Humphrey, another vicar who is due to give the sermon the following Sunday. Meanwhile Lionel returns and is knocked out by a German POW escapee, who steals Lionel's clothes. The real Arthur Humphrey turns up and when the police arrive seeking the escapee, they are confronted with no less than four identically-dressed vicars, all claiming to be the genuine article...
This classic British farce has had audiences rolling in the aisles for over 60 years and under the sure direction of Ian Rigney, we're certain this tradition will continue.
