Shoe-Horn Sonata
A drama by John Misto
Directed by Linda Davey
St Jude's Players are proud to present the South Australian première of this powerful drama, which is based on actual events during and after the fall of Singapore in 1942.
The play is set in 1995 where Sheila and Bridie are reunited for the first time, 50 years after the end of the War, for the filming of a television documentary. On one level The Shoe-Horn Sonata is about their incarceration by the Japanese in a prisoner of war camp following their failed attempt to flee before the invading troops, and the brutality and hardship they experienced during those dreadful years. However, as the play develops, we discover more about Sheila and Bridie and we realise that this reunion is essential if their emotional wounds are to be healed. Woven into their half century of separation are a shoe-horn, a terrible secret and incredible loyalty and love which form their unlikely friendship. The Shoe-Horn Sonata is a wonderfully funny and deeply touching play.

ART / Bed Among the Lentils
Comedies by Yasmina Reza and Alan Bennett
Directed by Robert McCarthy
ART explores the complexities of friendship between three men: Serge, Yvan and Marc. Serge pays a lot of money for a minimalist painting which at first glance resembles nothing more than a white-painted rectangle. He's convinced it's high art and a terrific investment, but the others aren't so sure. Their discussion of the painting soon turns into an examination of their own friendship. Caution: This play contains some strong language.
Cast: 3M aged 40-50. Must be experienced actors.
Bed Among the Lentils comes from Alan Bennett's famous Talking Heads series of monologues. It introduces us to the wife of an Anglican vicar, unhappy with her lot, teetering on the edge of alcoholism, and wondering where her life might go. This is Bennett at his best with a masterful observation that is highly amusing, tragically poignant and wonderfully uplifting.

Pygmalion
A classic comedy by GB Shaw
Directed by Rosie Aust
Pygmalion has been entertaining audiences for nearly 100 years, and deservedly so. The classic tale of a Covent Garden flower-girl plucked from the gutter and turned into a 'lady' by a linguistics professor, just to win a bet, is both richly funny and, in typical Shavian style, thought-provoking. This is the original stage play that the enormously successful musical and film My Fair Lady are both based on, and despite being written nearly a century ago, Shaw's crackling wit shines through with every line.
