2002
Was A Truly Splendid Year
Whilst last year was a very pleasing one for the Players from a theatrical point of view, we could not have done it without you, our regular playgoers. We thank you for your magnificent support in 2002 — and assure you it’s a real pleasure to play to such appreciative audiences. To all the directors—Geoff Brittain (The Deep Blue Sea), Rosie Aust and Barry Hill (Nunsense) and Ian Rigney (Move Over Mrs Markham), and all the magnificent casts and crews involved, we say thank you very much for a remarkable year of entertainment.
|
For the last show in particular, there was such a demand for tickets that we had to take the unusual step of putting on a second matinée performance on the final Saturday. Alas, even this was not enough, as would-be patrons were besieging Tarlie Dack at the box office on the last few nights for a ticket — any ticket! All of this highlights the fact that the more our audiences grow, the more important it is for you to book early to get the seats and day that you want. Our preferential booking scheme enables you to book in advance of the general public, so please, take advantage of it when the next play is due and avoid disappointment! |

The
Madness of George III You may recall seeing the filmed version of Alan Bennett’s brilliant play (the film was titled The Madness of King George so that American audiences wouldn’t think it was a sequel to The Madness of George and The Madness of George II), with Nigel Hawthorne of Yes Minister fame as the King. Sadly Hawthorne is no longer with us, but his stellar performance (honed by playing the role on stage many times and which won him an Academy Award nomination plus a BAFTA Award) remains as a testimony to his enormous talent. “It’s a huge challenge to live up to,” says director Les Zetlein, “but I have high hopes that in its own way, our production will be just as entertaining and confronting.” It’s certainly not one to be missed, if only to see how Les manages to have the huge cast of 22 males and 4 females all on stage at the same time! |
Our
second production also promises to be hugely entertaining—it’s Neil Simon’s…
Laughter
on the 23rd Floor
Directed
by Judy Menz. By special arrangement with Dominie Pty Ltd.
Season:
30th July to 9th August
This hilarious play is another of Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical works based on his experience when he was a young man working as a comedy writer on The Sid Caesar Comedy Hour, a weekly American television comedy show, in the 1950’s. The characters are loosely based on the group of writers with whom he worked at the time, all wonderful individual characters, two of which were Woody Allen and Mel Brooks. It is set in 1953 in the Writers’ Room for “The Max Prince TV Variety Show” on the 23rd floor of a building on 57th Street, New York City, hence the name of the play. As always Neil Simon has us rolling in the aisles one moment and near to tears the next, but always coming out of the theatre having had a great theatrical experience. Well worth coming out for on a cold winter’s night !
Our
third production for the year is another outstanding masterpiece written
by our very own Harold Minear…
A
Load of Bullamakanka
A
Topical Australian Musical
Directed
by Rosie Aust and Harold Minear
Season:
5th to 15th November.
Following the great success of his 2001 Federation revue Fair Crack of the Whip, Harold Minear has created a sequel that pokes fun at Australia as we see it today. From politics to sport, from the media to entertainment – it even dares to look at the future!
