Our Last Show for 2004 …….
A brilliant play by Australian playwright
David Williamson

Brilliant Lies

Directed by Richard Lane

Featuring:

Narrah Luks, Richard Grieg, Vicky Wray, Greg Janzow, Alicia Smith, Michael Papps and with Brian Sexton as Dad

David Williamson’s play Brilliant Lies is certain to provoke a ripple of controversy wherever it plays. That’s because it’s about sexual harassment in the workplace, and that’s always controversial. The story line is simple: a young woman goes to the Anti-Discrimination Board and claims that she was sexually harassed in the office by her boss. The boss, Gary, said he didn’t do it and herein lies the dilemma. Is Susy, the employee, telling the truth? Is Gary?

As one would expect in a Williamson play, the issues are not straightforward. The assumption that people are only lying or only telling the truth is mostly far from reality. Is Susy telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but? Or is she merely telling her version of the incident, weaving a fabrication around the facts in order to gain what she believes is justice for herself? Doesn’t everybody?

Brilliant Lies also raises the question of the role of the mediator, Marion, who tries to conciliate matters between Susy and Gary. However, she is hardly a model counsellor because, as she says, “I’m usually on the side of the woman in these cases, and I ought to be!”
This critically-acclaimed play deals with serious, current issues but Williamson has also imbued it with his trademark humour, making for thought-provoking and entertaining theatre. Definitely one not to be missed!

A Man Of Many Talents

We pay tribute to Leo Heffernan – actor, director, writer and good friend of St Jude’s Players. Leo died on August 11th after a long illness, and we extend our sympathy to his family.

Our audiences will remember his hilarious performances in two of our early musical productions, The Ballad of Angels Alley and The Belle of Ballarat. In 1981 he directed the successful farce Uproar In The House for the Players. Most of his work as an actor was for the Adelaide Repertory Theatre where he gave some outstanding performances. He was also a prolific writer of short stories, some of which appear in the three anthologies published by our own local Seaside Writers Group.

Adelaide theatre folk will remember Leo not only for his many talents, but also for his lively sense of humour and his genuine friendship.
Harold Minear

Our Recent Production: Cohesive ensemble performances from Myra Waddell, Peter Smith, Allison Scharber and Fahad Farooque made Relatively Speaking another memorable chapter in St Jude’s Players’ history.

“Alan Ayckbourn is a very clever writer” wrote Matt Byrne of Messenger Press. “He always manages to expose the things that make us human, in the most humane way. …(Director) Norm Caddick handles this strolling comedy with understanding. …. Credit to Robert Aust for a flexible set design that manages to fit everything in, and it was nice to see some creative scenic art from Janet Ralph, that gave the show all the atmosphere of a very confused English garden.” Couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

Raffle Winner
The winner of the raffle conducted during the production of Relatively Speaking and drawn on the final night of the show was P. Byrne of Somerton Park. Congratulations, and we hope that you enjoy that wonderful prize.
